Milan beat Novara 2-1 on Wednesday night to reach the last eight of the Coppa Italia. Evergreen striker Pippo Inzaghi put the Rossoneri ahead on 12 minutes. The veteran received the ball in the box and fooled Alberto Cossentino with a turn before firing into the roof of the net. Novara equalised early in the second, but Milan grabbed victory through Mathieu Flamini’s thunderous long range effort on 81 minutes.
Milan skipper Massimo Ambrosini will miss this game through suspension. The Rossoneri have been in great form recently and have only suffered one defeat in the league since October. They are eight points behind city rivals Inter, but they also have a game in hand over the Nerazzurri.
Siena lost a seven goal thriller to Inter last week. Massimo Maccarone’s brace for Robur went in vain as Inter staged a great escape to emerge 4-3 winners. Albin Ekdal was Siena’s other scorer in that game. Alberto Malesani’s men are currently stuck to the bottom of the table with only twelve points from nineteen fixtures.
Reginaldo will serve the first of his two game ban this weekend. Also unavailable is Emilson Cribari, who was sent off in the dying stages of the game against Inter. It has not been a happy start to the New Year for Siena’s backline, which has conceded nine times in two league games against Fiorentina and Inter. It has also taken the side’s goal difference to minus sixteen- the worst in Serie A currently.
AC Milan appear to have put down a marker as the team that will be putting the pressure on leaders Inter Milan with their superb win away to fellow pursuers Juventus last time out. When Milan travelled to Turin in their last league game, everybody was expecting a tough encounter but the final score proved it was anything but. Two goals from Brazilian Ronaldinho and one from Nesta secured an emphatic 3-0 victory for the Milan side. This win moved Milan four points clear of Juve in the league and they have a game in hand over their Turin rivals. They are eight points behind leaders and city rivals Inter but again, have a game in hand which could prove significant in the coming weeks.
